ARCHIVED THREAD FROM THE NANOWRIMO FORUMS: NANOWRIMO SURVIVAL KIT 2019
Twilight_Angel | 2019-09-28 07:20:00 UTC | #1
Is it too early to start making the usual 2019 threads? I hope not! I love the survival kit thread and got a bit impatient waiting for it to pop up! So what are some things that you need for NaNo (or simply just make tackling NaNo a little easier?
Here's mine:
Laptop- I just got my hands on a rosegold macbook air. She's gorgeous and I love her and she's super light! I'm excited to tackle Nano with her.
Scrivener or Google Docs- I haven't decided which I want to use yet. I love scrivener for the organization but I struggle cause I can't access my work from wherever I want like I can with Google docs. I have no idea which will be my NaNo partner this year.
My Outline and character Profiles- As a plantser I need my semi coherent map to my novel. Sure its got a few missing spots but I still need it.
Headphones & music- I still use pandora. I don't get too crazy about making a playlist for my novel. I just need background noise.
Snacks- Absolute essentials include coffee, tea, chocolate and walnuts. Let's be honest I'll probably include soda and potato chips too.
Easy to cook meals- This is always hard for me. I'll need to start prepping this early.
Scheduled writing time- I started a new job recently and it doesn't allow the same down time as my previous job did so now I actually have to make time to write. This has been hard so far. Hopefully by Nov. I'll have a routine down.
My furry writing buddy, Delilah. She's not so good for writing cause she has a lot of energy and doesn't sit still much but she's a good reminder to get outside for some thinking time.
This is it for me, I guess. There's probably more I could include but I'll try to keep NaNo pretty simple this year. This is my first Nano that I get to do while not in college or grad school so I'm excited.
What's in your survival kit?

- Tea! All the tea
- Snacks
- The Library
- NaNo Research Forums & the internet in general for research
- Cats (variable)
- Time
- Writing buddies! Keep me accountable with word count
That's the essentials. Everything else is workable.

Ooo. Let's see...
-Laptop (phone in a pinch if I get an idea on the go.)
-4theWords for all the motivation when I hit writer's block and some extra motivation!
-Coffee and pop for my drinks of choice. For those early mornings or late night writing sessions. Water to stay hydrated.
-Earbuds to play music on (mostly video game soundtracks)
-Notes for the stuff I plan, mostly character sheets
-Since November starts to get cold where I am, finger-less gloves for typing.
BeyondTheSea | 2019-09-13 18:10:35 UTC | #6
- Chromebook.
- Google docs for outline and writing.
- Spiral notebook for hand-written notes.
- A clean house (a thorough house cleaning is my Halloween celebration).
- Music and headphones.
- Favorite spot at my library.
- Strings lights and an electric candle when I'm at home because the change away from Daylight Savings always depresses me a bit at first.
- Healthy snacks, sleep, and exercise to keep my mind sharp and creativity center fueled.

I tend to wing NaNo with no survival kit. This year I decided to create one, since it's been a few years since I won NaNo. There are in no given order of importance.
- Coffee, tea and water to drink.
- Macbook
- Scrivener
- A throw to cover up my legs and feet so I don't get cold while writing in my chair.
- My Marshmal Park stuffie to snuggle when I am not typing.
- All my notes for my novel.
- Simple snacks to grab and eat.
That's all I have for now. I will update if I think of anything else!
Brynichu | 2019-09-13 22:06:59 UTC | #8
I don't tend to have an official kit really, it's just my usual supplies for writing all year-round just with a November twist? :joy:
Scrivener - literal life saver for me as I''m writing a series and I need to keep referring back to the previous parts for random details.
Scented Candles - Specifically either Black Cherry or something Autumnal to keep my room feeling cosy
My bullet Journal - As well as using the nano site, i like to keep a record of my word count with the rest of my notes. It also has quite a few moodboards and song recs in it so it's a one-stop-shop for inspiration.
Coffee - I drink far too much considering I do most of my writing between 7pm and 3am but it keeps me going! Also November is prime time for Christmas flavours!
Spotify - Another life saver as I live in a very loud household (which is also why I write in the middle of the night lol)
My writing buddies on both the site and Discord - I have a few friends from past camp nanowrimos that I try to check in with during November to see if they're writing, and of course I tendd to lurk around the forums too  Feel free to add me as a buddy if you want!
Merawlee | 2019-09-13 23:20:52 UTC | #9
1 - My computer or iPad if I go write at the local cafe
2 - Tea, lots of tea with a side of pumpkin spice matcha latte too.
3 - Veggies snacks with spinach dip.
4 - And old pen I can chew on when I need to think.
5 - My playlist. I can write without it.
6 - My Discord buddies. They're the best to bounce ideas to.

My Alphasmart Neo 2
Water bottle
headphones

My bullet journal
my chiropractor appointments
Google Drive
Chocolate
The Harry Potter crawl
a warm fuzzy blanket

- My laptop, Idris - a two-year-old Acer Aspire running Windows 10.
- Scrivener. I recently migrated all of my WIPs over after buying a licence (my reward for winning Camp in July), and have been spending the last month and a half learning all its ins and outs. This year's NaNovel will be the first project I'll be writing in it from start to finish.
- Spotify, for listening to my NaNo playlist.
- Snacks. Lots of snacks.
- My meds - antidepressants for depression and anxiety, beta blockers for migraines, and my allergy meds for hayfever (NaNo is in spring here so my allergies go haywire - I'd rather not be sneezing all over my laptop).
- Discord, for chatting with WriMos in my region.
- My Nintendo Switch, for stress relief and breaks.
Cathryn_Dalton | 2019-09-14 02:38:53 UTC | #12
I love getting the chance to see everyone's NaNo Survival items! Having only attempted NaNo once before, it definitely helps me consider things I hadn't thought of adding before!
- My laptop, with Scrivener. I've drafted 2 projects using it, and I love it! Plus, internet isn't always something I have access to, so this lets me work around that.
- A USB flash drive. For backing up my work!
- My outline. 6k-10k words of where my story is going and a few possible routes to the end. Without this, I won't even finish the novel.
- Headphones, Spotify, and Youtube. Music, podcasts, or background videos are a must for me. I like listening to a novel-specific playlist, true crime podcasts, Drawfee youtube videos, or writing vlogs (I'm in love with Kate Cavanaugh atm).
- Coffee/Hot Chocolate. Or lemon and honey tea if I'm sick.
- Crunchy veggie snacks and some kind of dip. Usually red bell peppers and ranch dressing.
- My violin or my voice. Playing/singing songs is the way I relax and deal with stress.
- Sleep. The most important thing on this list, since I'm a college student with a full courseload. School comes first, and I need to sleep to do well in my classes!
takatāpui | 2019-09-14 14:10:59 UTC | #13
My laptop I write on my laptop, as my fingers keep up with my brain better on it, than in writing.
Scrivener! A must have since I first bought it, my favourite way to write!
My meds Gotta keep up to date on my meds. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, and sleep meds.
My Bullet Journal I guess? It's my first few months using it, but I can't wait to create a bunch of new spreads for NaNo especially!
My DIscord NaNo Rainbow group! A must have! I've made so many friends in this group, it's full of like-minded people who all enjoy writing, being LGBT on top of that is just one more thing we all have in common!
Hello Fresh This is one of those food bags that deliver recipes and ingredients on a Sunday for the rest of the week. This cuts out big, long grocery shops, and makes dinner and evenings faster and more streamlined.
The NaNo forums, of course! A must have for me, they help keep me motivated, and give me somewhere to vent when writing becomes just too much!
Youtube and spotify Especially those ASMR videos of the Harry Potter common rooms. They're so cozy! Plus, gotta have that novel specific playlist, c'mon now.
EDIT:
Can't forget Blank postcards to make into handmade calligraphied ones for the postcard swap!

YASSSS! The Survival Kit is my FAVORITE thread, and, while it is still too early for me to start getting my personal survival kit together, it is not too early for me to begin following this thread and "liking" (thank you, new forums!) all the survival kits I find particularly inspirational!
gabrielle_graves | 2019-09-14 17:36:53 UTC | #16
My survival kit has changed so much over time, but here are my staples:
- MacBook Air - It's tiny, light, and perfect for literally typing on my lap when there isn't a table available.
- Earbuds - For when I just need a little added inspiration but still want to hear the ambiance of where I am (usually at a coffeehouse).
- Noise-cancelling Earphones - For when I need to be completely submerged without distractions!
- Iced coffee - Also acceptable: cold brew, iced americanos, etc. Dark, like my writing.
- Stickers - For my wrimos when they come to write-ins!
- Google Docs - Easily the most reliable word processor available, saves every few seconds and works with Grammarly.
- Scrivener - For when I'm offline. (God forbid!)
- Spotify Premium - It has all my playlists which include individual ones for characters, moods, and specific scenes. Yes, music is co-writing this novel!
- Big, comfy sweater - The bigger, the more comfortable, the better. I can write anywhere as long as my clothes are comfy!
- My favorite water cup from Starbucks - Any other hydrohomies doing NaNo?
EmpressTheodora | 2019-09-14 18:21:09 UTC | #17
Good luck on your first Nano! I love your Survival Kit. My favorite items are the reading material (always forget to add that) and homemade Chex mix. I’ve never homemade it, my my husband has a student who gives theirs to all the teachers for Christmas every year, and I’m OBSESSED.
EmpressTheodora | 2019-09-14 18:23:57 UTC | #18
A clean house (a thorough house cleaning is my Halloween celebration).
This is a great tradition. I wish I had the self-discipline for this.

Time to gather my Nano Survival Kit for 2019!
- My Acer - Awesome 4yo (soon to be 5!) computer that does it all. It is getting up there in age though and is becoming crankier every day I boot it on. It may be his last Nano :(
- My Nano Bullet Journal - funny thing, I'm a hobonichi girl. I can only journal in that wonderful creation that is a hobonichi. For Nano? Bujo all the way. I keep my trackers, my inspiration, my quotes and my social media planning is in there!
- My snacks - mixed nuts, homemade chocolate chips, zucchini bread, Halloween candies, homemade cinnamon chips, etc. Anything that satisfies my sweet tooth.
- Google Docs - The only thing that allows me to write at work (shhhhh don't let my boss know!)
- Coffee and tea! - I'm a sucker for both. Morning is for coffee, afternoon and evening are for tea!
- Earbuds - I can't write without music, and it may be inappropriate to blast heavy rock music at work ;)
- My dogs - It's silly, but my dogs are big helpers! They force me to go on walks, take breaks and generally let go of my stress
- Wool socks - It gets awfully cold in Northern Canada during November, and wearing my wool socks is a comfort of mine, and a tradition for Nano!
vestraegir | 2019-09-14 22:12:51 UTC | #20
- Alphasmart Neo2. This is my first NaNo writing with it, so here's hoping it doesn't crash on me again.
- My laptop. Still gotta check forums and my regional Discord server. Might even hook the Neo up to it when I'm at home.
- Starbucks. Need the atmosphere to write! The hot chocolates, iced teas, and creme frapps don't hurt, either.
- Headphones. I realized that I prefer them on even when I'm not listening to music. The music isn't the necessary part, the headphones are. It makes me feel like a tool, but hey, writing goes better, so whatever.
- Health. Nothing beats enough water and sleep to keep going, friends. Caffeine is not a substitute for proper hydration and sleep. Yes, I will fight you over this. It's for your own good.
- Seconding the clean house. Need my stuff to be in order so my thoughts are also in order.

My iPad Pro complete with handy dandy keyboard cover. I’ve found it to be a nice alternative since my poor laptop kicked the bucket earlier this year.
Scrivener.
My digital outline and bullet journal. Since I’m doing most of my writing away from home, it’s easier on me to have everything digitally this year rather than carry all my notebooks around.
Big over the ear headphones. For when I want a visual tell that I don’t want to be bothered by people.
Music & Ambient sound apps.
My coziest hoodie. Complete with built in thumb holes so I don’t need gloves!
My favorite mug. Honestly it’ll probably live in my locker at work for the month (good thing I work at a coffee place).
My writing mascot/totem. I haven’t decided what it’ll be this year, but I’m sure I’ll have that settled by Halloween.
Tea. Lots and lots of tea.

You sound pretty well prepared to me! Just one last item - acceptance of the madness that awaits you, 1667 words per day ;)
ahighcalling | 2019-09-14 23:50:24 UTC | #23
I am so excited to be back in the NaNo world. Grad school prevented me from joint last year, but I’m determined to fit it in somehow this year.
My survival kit
- iPad Pro with keyboard case
- Dark roast coffee with a variety of pumpkin flavorings
- My Happy Planner that houses all my notes
- My planner cart to get creative with I get stuck in my novel
- And hopefully, some semblance of a plot by Nov 1st :joy:
Rosie_Read | 2019-09-15 00:54:23 UTC | #24
- Laptop of course
- Notebook (for handwriting) basically my erratic bullet journal.
- 3+ 'Pilot precise V5 RT Pens' because it's the only pen that can actually keep up with me.
- Scrivener which will constantly be backed up on Docs so I can work from my phone if needed.
- Tea and Hot Cocoa I don't drink coffee because I have a pretty strong paradoxical response.
- Sock Slippers because they make me feel safe. And also warm. Even if im wearing shorts when it's deep winter.
- A Lot of Naps and Laying on the Ground with my Eyes Closed It's the best way for me to reset my brain, and the only way to generate a scene that is actually logically consistant and emotionally resonant.
Rosie_Read | 2019-09-15 00:57:09 UTC | #25
Ooo! I need to remember to dig out my portable Bluetooth keyboard. I haven't used it in a few NaNos but that thing was quite handy for random words sprints throughout the day.

I feel like this changes for me every year. Lol.
Laptop: Of course. This is how I do all my actual writing. Last year, I purchased a MacBook Air, and I love it. I'm thinking I want a new cover for her, though.
Scrivener/Google Docs: I use Scrivener exclusively while writing, but I share via Google Docs with friends and beta readers. I usually always have my laptop with me during November, so I don't need to use Google for the actual writing itself.
My Novel Binder: I'm a total planner. I have an entire binder dedicated to my series of novels that I've been writing for a few years. I've got all my character profiles and maps and outlines and world-building details in there (I'm writing parallel-dimension/portal quest fantasy).
Writing Space: I have to have a dedicated writing space. Come November, it will be cool enough to sit upstairs and write (we need a window AC unit for the summer, but keep not getting one). I'll have it decorated in a cozy way and I will have all of my things up there.
White Boards: I've always done my best brainstorming on a whiteboard propped on an easel. It helps me get all of my thoughts out, and then I can take a photo of it/write it down in a notebook once I have it ironed out.
A Fall-Scented Candle: Bath and Body Works has the best three-wick candles, and I always buy several for fall because they just put me right in the mood to write. I usually burn one during each of my writing stints.
Coffee and Water: Gotta stay caffeinated and hydrated, folks.
A Cozy Sweater or Blanket: If I had a writing totem, this would be it. Being warm and cozy while writing is an absolute must.
Anyway, I think that's all? I'm sure I'm missing something but this is what I'm gonna go with this year.
S.L.Goodin | 2019-09-15 02:21:23 UTC | #29
-My Laptop, light little thing I can take anywhere
-Scrivener: My new go to writing app, since I take my lap top everywhere I have been loving this, also it organizes everything in a better way that Google Docs.
-Something to drink in a big cup: Water, coffee, tea, soda as long as it's in a large enough cup where I can drink more than twice before needing to refill it.
-Headphones: To block sound.
-Ambient sounds: Have a list of different ambient videos I can listen to depending on the scene I'm writing in.
-Scarf or cardigan: In case I end up too cold while writing.
-My Partner in Crime: My boyfriend who reminds me I should go outside and cheers me on for whatever word count I've gotten so far.
Autumn_J_Cruz | 2019-09-16 02:32:16 UTC | #30
-Laptop: My Chromebook is my everything when it comes to school and writing. So I need to have my laptop.
-Planner: Right about now I am struggling with college and writing. With that I need to have my planner so I can block out writing times and reminders for both my goals in my teaching career and writing.
Cup: My straw cups from Starbucks will probably be my saviors as they will be the thing I hold tea, water, soda in.
Camera: One thing I am starting this year is to document my writing journey. It will be more of a project for me and something also to keep me in check.
Sweater: For comfort.
Headphones: Block out sound and be focused on my novel.
Novel soundtrack: I am actually deleting my old one I have for this and recreating it soon.

Yay the survival kit thread! Probably my favorite part of a new Nano. My survival kit isn't fully put together yet, I still have a bunch of stuff to do for it.
My laptop - I need to look for a new battery for it as the battery is running out of charge quickly.
Headphones - I have two pairs so I'm good to go!
Playlists - Still need to finish putting this together.
Scrivener
Notebook
Basic outline - Haven't even started, I'm not good at planning things but I'm trying. I'm not even sure what I'll be writing this year.
Hot chocolate - Of course I already have this one sorted.
Stuf to make hot butterbeer
Office tidy and organised ready to go - Still a work in progress, organising an office literally the size of a single bed is hard.
Writing location outside of home - The Libary of course, but maybe two libraries, the one in my town and the one in the city over the river for when I write with my friend.
Ambient sound videos
Warm comfy clothing

The Daylight Savings getting an extra hour in a day is very cool/fun (like Leap Day) - but the sun instantly going down an hour early depresses me too. You are so right with the candle idea. I think it's time I start getting them out of summer storage.
Ms_M | 2019-09-16 15:23:48 UTC | #33
It doesnt feel like Nano-season until I've posted on the Nano Survival kit thread! Mine is pretty standard:
Macbook
Scrivener
Luddite Scrivener (in the 20th century called a binder with index dividers, filled with notes)
Writing Journal
Bullet Journal
Notebook/s and pen if I decide to handwrite
iPod with earbuds
Past Nano shirts- wear it, live it!
Writing animal- mine is a 10 year old rabbit and occasionally a cat
Writing Totem- haven't got one yet, but my story is titled "Doll-Maker", so I may have to make one of the characters in ragdoll form; or I could use the Rhaegar Targaryen doll (GoT represent!)I already made which partly inspired this novel. Oh who am I kidding, I love making these things, I will make a new one especially for Nano and this novel and also I have some unresolved issues w GoT that I dont want to have to think about all month when I look at Rhaegar. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Another doll maker!
Ms_M | 2019-09-16 15:37:49 UTC | #35
That's exciting, I didnt think there'd be any others on here!
TinyFist | 2019-09-16 15:58:19 UTC | #36
Yes, there are doll makers here.
I made most of the dolls my children played with and they still have those dolls. I made dolls to resemble each of my nieces, too. They got much better after I took a class with Xavier Roberts on soft scuplture.
I also made a full set of Rocky Horror Picture Show dolls to sell at a fundraising auction for AIDS. I attached each one of those sequins by hand on Columbia's outfit.
For writer friends, I make polymer clay Muses they can put on their computers.
What materials and methods do you use?
Most of mine are soft sculptured of slightly stretchy fabrics, but I also make some some heads/hands/feet from polymer clays (Sculpey, mostly) and wire them into stuffed fabric bodies.

- Laptop when at home and iPad set up like a laptop when I'm out of the house.
- Scrivener!
- Codex for my novel!
- Research books needed for reference.
- SNACKS!
- Lifetime supply of coffee and water.
- AmbientMixer for background sounds.

I'm all about simple ragdolls using Kona cotton for skin and hair. I have my own patterns for bodies and I like hand embroidering faces and designing and sewing clothes (and hair) for them. It helps with my desire to draw and make clothes, what I went to school for. This is my Rhaegar, with the most current style of hair I'm doing (Gendry, also from GoT is in the background). I'll hopefully get better at it soon. I've only been serious about making them for a year now.

My iPad, bluetooth keyboard, and Scrivener app. I'm gonna try doing something drastic and only writing on my iPad this year to try to minimize distractions (there are still games I'd play but of course it's a pain to keep having to switch apps and such)
Candy for rewards. Mostly peanut butter based, like Reese's cups and peanut butter M&Ms. And Smarties. Can't forget Smarties.
Comfy hoodies and blankets. It'll be November in Maine, so bar a freak weather front, I'll need to keep warm.
Cat toys. Because the cat loves being part of things so I'll need aways to distract her.

My Survival Kit:
-Google docs (I like Google less and less for trust reasons, but it currently contains my book, so it’ll do until I find another way to write.)
-Tea or Soda (particularly cream soda)
-Hot Cider or Chocolate, for colder days!
-A cookie or two, if I have them around
-A cat! My beloved Pandora passed away about two weeks ago due to sickness, but her brother and two other cats remain to keep me & my family company.
-My sister on speed dial (though she’s busy with college)
-Several prompts I’ve written or found to get myself going!
-My outline notebook—a small, black book containing the secrets of my work...very cute and helpful!
-Time set aside on weekends; it’s hard to write with school unfortunately around.

Laptop! Can't do anything without it, she's a bit older and not all the keys work but she does her job ^^. For program we use Microsoft Word since we have a certification and know it well, and again it does what we need.
Tablet! For the art portions, we have a small Wacom Intuos that we carry around everywhere and it works well enough for us, we do also have a larger Bamboo tablet but last time we checked it wasn't working (though that one is very finicky).
References! Given the nature of our story we need to be able to look up information about the character's species, although it's not intended to be completely realistic we do want to at least have some true to life accuracy.
The plans! We have the rough outline for the whole thing and for chapter by chapter. This is important since we're going to be drawing and writing, so we have to keep to the plan ^^'.
Coffee or tea! Depending on where we are, tea is best at dad's house, coffee is best at mom's, and coffee shop whatever we're feeling.
Stim toys! Lately we've been working on our "stim pack" so we'll probably just bring that, and having a chewy usually helps in particular since we can stim while still using both hands to type. The problem though is if we go out to write, but it's great at home.
Absolute essentials include coffee.
Nailed it. Just that and a laptop. Though I need a new one, as mine has gone kaput at precisely the wrong time :no_good_man:

My survival kit this year includes:
*Laptop (need a new one this year because my preschool teacher was wrong, sharing isn't caring. e.g. colds.)
*Sparkly gel pens and notebook
*Colorful index cards
*Coffee/tea bar with favorite mugs
*Noise cancelling headphones (because writing a sweet scene is hard when your SO has The Punisher playing in background.)
*Quick grab snacks and freezer breakfast sandwiches
*Alexa (for playing music and to answer random definition or world questions and ordering Dominos when writing went a little long and I forgot to start the crockpot earlier)
*Playlists for different mood writing
*Tons of freezer/crockpot meals so I can focus on writing instead of making dinner or meal planning
*Planner and worksheets
*Scrivener
*Poster putty for displaying important words lists on nearby wall
*NaNowear, pajama/yoga pants and fuzzy socks because I don't want to live in a world where writing in my pjs is not okay.
*Ebooks and NaNo site to read on breaks
*Fall scent stuff because it puts my brain in a happy place.
*Writing buddies

Such a classic survival kit. Mine is going to look similar when I finally get it together, sometime in October...

Second Nano, but hopefully a first win this season.
Here's mine for you guys!
Macbook Air: This baby is on her last leg but she still keeps herself pretty with a bunch of stickers at least!
My Google Docs Outline, and Google Drive in general: I already have so much put into my google drive folder for this year, which is good compared to the lack of anything from last year (oops!)
My Free Period: I'm a student at the moment so it is always busy times, but luckily I have a free period this year and I am going to utiltize that hour and a half as much as I can this November.
Spotify: Always a godsend. She has never been problematic. Love her.
Nano Word Sprint Twitter: This was the only reason I wrote last year. I really love the concept of word sprints (I wanna explore other challenges too though, there is a lot I haven't done) and they always work for me and increases my WPM.
My Girlfriend: For thinking I'm crazy but condoning my crazy during the month of November.

Chiropractor appointments are a blessing - especially with all that writing! I never thought about that for a NaNo Survival Kit, but now that you've mentioned it, all I can think is "Duh!!!!!!"

For pre-prep...
- Natalia Leigh's Preptober Workbook (last year's but how much can prep change?)
- Abbie Emmons' videos on YouTube
- a bunch of stuff I've printed off of the internet along the years
- the organization software Joplin which I can synchronize across all my devices (my Windows laptop, my Macbook, my smart phone) and keep my notes with me at all times
- huge papers, sticky notes, sharpies and the like for plotting, I like to plot the old-fashioned way first
- the husband, for bouncing ideas off of
For prep...
- Joplin, again
- Abbie Emmons' videos, again
- Scrivener for finalizing the plotting
- the husband, for bouncing ideas off of
For November...
- Joplin, again, because I plan on keeping all my notes in there, plus for writing while on the go?
- Scrivener for writing
- Spotify. Seriously. Couldn't live without it.
- so much energy drinks, I cannot cope without caffeine
- Ambient Mixer, RainyMood etc
- the bed. yes, even writers need to sleep occasionally.
- the dog. yes, even writers need someone to pull them outside occasionally.
- the cat. yes, writers, too, need cuddles.
- the husband for the times I'm in need of some reassurance and for bouncing ideas off of

*The internet to make sure I'm correct in what I'm writing
*Water and tea
*Notes
*A blanket

- Laptop(s) - Work or home, one or the other. I prefer writing on my personal laptop but in past years I have been known to sneak away during work hours... Shh, don't tell my boss.
- OneDrive/Word - It's been a super long time since I last wrote a novel using Word, but right now this will be the easiest for me since we just transitioned to Microsoft at work and I always have it open anyway.
- Memory, Emotions, Lots of Breaks - I'm rebelling and recounting a traumatic event in my past, so I definitely need the flexibility to take breaks and even days off, if needed.
- Frozen Fruit - This is my snack of choice this year. I'm also trying to lose weight... writing a novel never helped with that so I need to be conscious about what I'm eating! Smoothies and water will be on tap, too.
- Free Time and Coffee on the Weekends - Weekends will be my prime writing time. I've already told all my friends not to expecte my company.
- Exercise! - I'll keep up with the fitness classes I'm in to give myself breaks and move my limbs. One of them is very interactive so I won't be able to use it for thinking about my novel, but the other should be great for tying things together.
- Blanket - As a blanket person, I have many to choose from... I'll definitely need to cozy up on the couch for writing!
- Art, Letter Writing, or Other Forms of Creativity - This is the best way to procrastinate!
Mary_Frances_Gualandri | 2019-09-18 00:43:16 UTC | #57
Laptop- I suppose this would go without saying.
Scrivener- My Scrivener file contains a good chunk of my research as well as my character profiles/sketches, therefore all of my reference material is there.
Writing Beverage- It depends on the day (and the temperature outside), but I typically favor a chai tea latte to accompany as I write. I will occasionally also substitute hot chocolate or, if I'm writing in the evening, quite possibly a glass of wine.
Writing Buddies- In the past, my writing buddies have often been the best form of support.
Music- Honestly, this should probably be higher on the list, but music is essential. I cannot write in silence, so a playlist is alway on in the background.
patfan | 2019-09-18 01:30:45 UTC | #58
@TinyFist I love doll making! I've only made a few out of cloth, I usually crochet. I usually make a tiny figure (ninjas or bunnies) for people in my writing group to use as writing buddies.
Undersketch | 2019-09-18 02:26:45 UTC | #59
Laptop
Google Docs
YouTube/YouTube Music
Discord buds
Soft blankets and pillows
A vague outline that makes zero sense but works anyway
Never actually won a NaNoWrimo, but I still plan on trying anyway!

alright, for my nano survival kit i like to include-
a handy-dandy portable hard-drive full of past and possible future stories and story ideas (saved files off my main computer)
lots of coffee and tea with crunchy snacks (no clue why but crunchy snacks like ginger snaps, celery with crunchy peanut butter, and chex-mix help me think)
my planner book (while not related to my writing it does help me remember when I'm supposed to leave the house for work )
epic music playlist (i prefer instrumentals for writing so that i don't try and listen to words)
a penny for luck and a marble so that i know i haven't lost it yet (pun intended, i have yet to lose my marbles when writing)
last but not least a list of characters so that i don't start forgetting eye colors or important backstory events!
Suomina | 2019-09-18 13:49:16 UTC | #62
This is my survival kit:
My macbook My main writing tool. The laptop that has served name for about 5 years now and I have mainly used it for school related things, but i'll be writing my nanowrimo story on it as well
Google Docs Drive This year I have started writing some world building and outline in google drive, so i'll try if it works with writing a story as well
Tea I drink a whole pot tea. easily. So i'll use it during nanowrimo as well.
Don't know any other ways that are essential yet, so i'll just try and see what works

I started using Freshly for the easy to cook meals requirement. They're healthy, fresh, and only need 3 minutes in the microwave. Even my exhausted self can handle that

- Notebooks and Pretty pens for notes
- Google Docs for writing and backing up my novel
- Tea and Coffee for hydration and energy
- Biscuits for energy bursts
- My 'Rain Sounds' App for concentrating during writing sprints

Hmmmm. It's been a while since I thought about my NaNo Survival kit. This is what I have going for the moment but it's subject to change as we get closer. This reminds me, I should make a nano prep checklist.:thinking:
- Laptop - This thing is old and covered in stickers and I love it
- Bullet Journal - My whole life is in that tiny notebook
- Google drive/docs - I love that I can access it anywhere, with regular saves to my computers
- List of places to write at - I'm always way more productive when I'm not at home
- Novel and character outline - I tried pantsing, it just results in a mess, so outlines it is
- Cross stitch - for when I need a break and a good think
- Earl grey tea lattes and cinnamon dulces from starbucks - and sometimes self made if I want to save money lol
- Apple Music and several playlists - for moods
- A rain simulator - for when music is distracting
- A cozy sweater - because cozy

My Chromebook. I've been debating if I want to use my PC this year simply so I can use Scrivener (I miss it dearly), but using my Chromebook would be better since I'll be able to write anywhere.
Google Docs. Gets the job done, but again, I really miss Scrivener.
My notebook that holds all the info for my novel.
Halloween candy to snack on while writing. I tell myself that I'll use it as a reward for after completing my word count for the day, or after sprints, but that never works out :stuck_out_tongue:
Tea/Coffee/Hot chocolate. I need a lot of it to keep me warm during the winter.
Headphones and noises: Music, a playlist for this year's novel, and things to put on simply for background noise. I can't stand complete silence, so if I'm not listening to music, then I have something playing.
My cat. He likes to spend all day and night in my room in the winter, so having him with me while I write is comforting. Plus it gives me an excuse to take a break every few words to cuddle him ;)
KaeAlexandria | 2019-09-18 14:40:05 UTC | #67
Laptop: I bought a backpack big enough to hold my massive laptop just so I could take it to write ins. I've traditionally been a notebook person, but found that I can write more on a keyboard than on paper.
Planning Notebook: All of my planning and world building is still done on paper though!
Spotify Writing Playlist: I need music to avoid distraction. Lots of dark, moody, storytelling lyricals to keep me in the right mindset.
Snack: I am a habitual muncher, so I gotta feed to beast to keep writing!
Discord: I'm part of a writing discord that I often turn to for advice, critique and support.
My husband: The only person I believe sometimes when I'm feeling down and he tells me my work is worth writing.
A comfy sweater and / or a blanket: Most of my best work is done bundled up in warmth.
My cat gang: my trip of furry little cheerleaders who love me now matter how many words I wrote that day <3

Pro-tip for using google docs (I did for years)--If you write your whole novel in 1 document, it will likely start to lag really bad, and it will take a while to load because the file gets pretty hefty. I recommend making a folder for your novel and writing each chapter in its own doc if that will be an issue for you.
Suomina | 2019-09-18 14:50:10 UTC | #70
Thanks for the tip. Will definitely implement it during NaNoWriMo.

Cannot second this enough! It also has the added benefit of making each part of your story easily accessible so if you are writing chapter 25 and realize you need to add to chapter 10 you can back out and instantly get where you need to be, instead of scrolling around looking for the right place.

Oh gods I hadn’t thought about my Nano survival kit.
- Laptop
- External harddrive
- Mouse
- Pinterest page for book (in the making)
- Playlist(currently in the making)
- Coffee
- Chai Tea
- Notebooks
- The Binder(acts as planner, where I keep goals, and school work info)
- Colored pens
- Grape taffy
More things might get added to this list later on. Buy some healthy foods closer to the date.
anon38831642 | 2019-09-18 16:37:10 UTC | #73
Mine is relatively simple...
Laptop (mildly clunky and cranky, but I still love it)
Tea/Coffee
Table or Bed Need's easy outlet access as per the request of grumpy computer who's screen won't remain on if not plugged into constant power.
Free Time Could be any time of day but likely mornings or late evenings. I did most of my writing last year till 1 or 3 am, and I'm hoping to instead get up earlier this year and write before school .
Music/Headphones Absolutely essential. Gotta have my audiomachine playlists to keep me on task.
Binder When writing a space trilogy much information is needed to be recorded and remembered. I'm on book three so I'm gonna need my handy dandy binder containing outlines, plotlines, character sketches and sheets, cultural points, intergalactic political relations, and those tiny details like food and aliens.
Word or Google Docs Can't write without a good writing platform. Probably gonna write in Word cause it's easier on the eyes, then back up in Google Docs.
That's mine!

My list is as follows:
baby bubbles my beautiful laptop, all brand spanking new
word most of my documents are written in word
story bible bio's of characters, planets, creatures, flora and how things work and look outline if I've created one
coffee and sometimes tea, depending on the time of day snacks probably fruit, I'm a coeliac and borderline diabetic, so it sucks
Tunes constructed music list on headphones to help with writing
company of fur-babies two cute little Yorkie Apsos...and one devilish cat
time on discord as there are no regional groups around me here in the Midwest of Ireland, being able to communicate with the Dublin based group is comforting and a life saver that's all I can think of for now, I'll add more as the month approaches.
katvoira | 2019-09-18 21:46:04 UTC | #76
My list has gradually expanded each year, so now it looks like this:
- laptop
- ms word
- word app on phone
- word an my work laptop
- onedrive folder with all my notes
- USB stick for the backup backup
- Relentless cherry (30x)
- snacks
- cleared a space in the house to take over for the month
- warned my other half basically not to get in my way unless he's bringing aforementioned snacks
- tracking my fave forum threads
If all the Microsoft seems odd, know that I have office 365 so it's all included for me :grinning:

Ooh, I love this. I always try to post in this particular topic every year since it tends to change in some way.
A few things I will always need and have found that I love to use over the last year:
My Acer Laptop I love this thing. I used to use a 10 year old (about 2 years ago) laptop that I got after my now girlfriend's civil law husband passed away. It worked for what I needed but was rather huge so made getting around to things hard. This one is about half the weight and has a bigger screen.
My Tea Collection Okay, yes, the tea collection has gone down lately. That's fine. I have plenty of smaller tea amounts in various flavors that I will be drinking.
My coffee collection I like flavored coffee. That's all I'm going to say about that.
My "I Love You a Latte" Mug My mom accidentally dropped my Inspiration Butterfly mug. That mug now holds little things and I now have a cute mug to drink my morning tea out of. Never coffee. Tea.
My Bullet Journals I have 2 of them. One is for monthly word counts, and one holds my shorter story outlines. I actually have a third one that I use to keep track of the Camp and Nano counts for easier checking on.
GDocs and Microsoft Word These I love to death. I use them all the time and I will happily continue to use them.
Discord I am a part of a few discord servers, and have one of my own. I'm also a moderator for a couple myself so I'm always on there.
Movies, Youtube, Spotify, Netflix, and TubiTV I use all of these. The movies are literally just hard copy movies that I've collected over the years. pets them Depending on my mod will depend on what I do that day.
My secondary Screen I just got this beautiful thing. It's absolutely wonderful. It makes it so that I can write in fullscreen with movies/music/whatever playing on the second screen. Or I can watch movies with my girl without having to worry about trying to write and allow her to see the darn movie.
It's nice.
I think that's everything that I need for this year. :D

i think i hammered out my nano survival kit over the past two years, so this is what really helps me!
- Obviously laptop it's turning 9 this october, and i've done nano with it every year, haha. battery's going out though, gives me anywhere between 1-2 hours of screentime before it dies, so i pretty much have to constantly be plugged in.
- FocusWriter man i love this program. it's perfect for distraction-free writing and the themes and scene separator feature is absolutely everything i need.
- myWriteClub for days when i need a little extra oomph in my writing sprints.
- phone and "tide" app it's a white-noise generator set up with a timer, so perfect for giving me the background noise i need for my 10-minute sprints. i don't usually listen to music when writing anymore as trying to find the perfect track to fit the mood of what i'm getting into takes too much time, so i prefer just rain noises.
- earphones the rain noise works better when i use them, haha
- leftover halloween candy writing snacks
- discbound notebook keeps my outline, character sheets, story notes, and word count/sprint trackers all in one handy-dandy place
- water cup, and also a warm drink i currently have hot chocolate and vanilla chai latte mixes, and i've been dying to get some lavender syrup and earl grey tea so i can do lavender london fogs at home.
- wrist warmers, fuzzy socks, blankets, hoodies, etc... i get cold, haha
- custom word count calendar i like doing the reverse nano challenge, and usually i have an anime convention to go to sometime during november so i adjust the word count targets a little so i don't have to worry about writing when i wanna have fun. not going to the convention this year, but i'm still gonna do the challenge anyway! i find it's easier for me as i tend to run out of steam as the month goes on.

This is my first time participating in NaNoWriMo! I'm really excited and a little nervous about writing so much. Here's what I think I'll probably need:
My laptop. I love using OneNote, it is so great for organization, and I have the app on my phone so I can use it on the go. It doesn't do word counts, as far as I know, but I'll probably copy/paste into a word doc whenever I feel the need to check word count.
A cozy spot to write. I love sitting in the armchair by the bay window in my apartment, but I also love coffee shops.
Time to write. I have a full time job and a bunch of other things on my plate so having the time to write is what I am most concerned about, but I think it will be a good way to unwind and enjoy myself.
A general outline. I always end up changing the outline multiple times whenever I am writing a story, but it's good to have a foundation. This also includes loosely sketched character descriptions and motivations.
Writing buddies to keep me accountable. I also love being able to talk through ideas with other people and it can be very inspirational.
That's all I can think of for now!
aHauntedCastle | 2019-09-19 15:17:43 UTC | #81
I don't think I've ever done this on a public forum, but it's such a fun little exercise! Here's mine:
- My laptop (with its humongous screen and keyboard)
- Headphones and mouse (I usually keep the trackpad turned off when I'm drafting for even fewer distractions on the screen)
- Flash drive
- Scrivener
- Bullet journal
- Drafting notebook (separate from my bujo for lined paper and more room to do things that aren't just the novel)
- Pens and a pencil (plus a little washi tape for fun)
- Index cards (my outline is in Scrivener as well, but I like having a physical set for sifting through, referring back to, etc., especially if there's a technical issue)
- Travel mug (sometimes it's tea, sometimes it's coffee)
- Water bottle
- Flannel shirt (for warmth and softness)
- Compression gloves (I'm a writer by trade and by hobby, so carpal tunnel/general hand pains are a big problem. These help squeeze my hands back into shape)
- Spotify (funny enough, I don't listen to my book playlist while I'm working on it--the words distract me, so it's all instrumental/lofi for me)
- A book (for when the well is running dry)
- Snacks (nuts and other fortifying things for the hunger pangs, chocolates and lemon drops for rewards!)
That looks longer than I expected, but really, it's just my everyday "I'm off to write" backpack!

Hmm, let's see:
- my laptop that I think I'm finally ready to adorn with my spare NaNo stickers (just got it last year and didn't want to mar it's perfectness last NaNo)
- backup notebook for when I need a change of medium (it helps sometimes to handwrite over typing)
- G-2 pens in 16 amazing colors
- 4thewords.com for all of my writing needs and motivation (where I'll do the bulk of my brainstorming, writing and venting)
- Scrivener (where I'll be storing my official outline and copy/pasting everything written at 4tw)
- Jelly Belly Beans (buy them in a huge container at Costco)
- good craft beer for late night writing
- yummy coffee creamers for morning writing (preferably mint mocha in the winter)
- Pokemon Go for when I need a mental break (they spawn in my backyard so I don't even need to leave the house)

My laptop (I may be getting a new one specifically for writing by November if I'm lucky. I currently work on a gaming laptop)
Notebook (Will have my story notes, (general) outline, and editing notes as I go since I can't go back and edit my work during NaNoWriMo)
Starbucks caramel flavored k-pod coffee (I always drink this when I'm actively writing, especially during April, July, and November)
Google Docs or a program that has a full screen (I like to share my progress with my husband and co-writer, so Google Docs makes that easier)
Snacks (I like eating triscuits, certain candies, and maybe some cereal bars)
My crystals for focus and creativity (a new thing that I am doing this year, I will be buying crystals/stones that help with focus and creativity to help give me a little boost)
Soundtrack (I like to make little 'soundtracks' for my stories, it helps me focus to have music that helps with the feel of the story)
Headphones (earbuds more like, so I can listen to my music without disturbing my husband)
There may be a couple of other things I'm wanting to add, but I can't think of them right now. It's always fun thinking of things to add to the kit and it sometimes likes to change depending on the year. I also love seeing what others put in their survival kits.
yoghurtelf | 2019-09-20 04:55:56 UTC | #86
My survival kit would include:
- Laptop, or if at home, iMac
- Scrivener
- Music & headphones (at home, iTunes, or out, my iPod) - either way, my listens get sent through as Scrobbles to my Last.fm account :)
- Snacks - this may constitute dinner a lot of the time!
- Largely event-free evenings after work so I can write ;) Social life? No, I don't want one of those thanks.
LeighFitz | 2019-10-30 01:47:33 UTC | #88
I've got a long list of survival kit items:

- Resource Books On writing by Stephen King; Elements of Style (Illustrated) by William Strunk Jr.; Aspects of the Novel by E.M. Forster
- Cozy Candle -- I went with "Autumn" from Wax Buffalo
- Cozy Blanket -- I love Nordstrom's Cuddle Up Faux Fur Throw in white :hugs:
- Fuzzy Socks
- Slippers
- Cozy and Cute Sweater -- a distressed pink soft chenille sweater from Four Sisters does just the trick
- Coffee -- I love flavored, independently roasted beans and order mine from Innkeeper's Coffee, a small batch roastery. I always get Butterscotch Toffee (my favorite) and a second flavor I haven't tried before. I brew it for iced and drink it in my...
- Travel Mug -- preferably double walled so it doesn't "sweat" condensation all over my work!
- Cast Iron Japanese Style Teapot -- for loose leaf teas when I need something more relaxing than coffee
- Loose Leaf Teas
- H2O -- in my camelback water bottle infused with fresh lemon and mint or cucumber
- Spotify Premium -- I couldn't live without it! I love instrumental movie soundtracks especially for writing
- Brainwave Studios App -- for background news that makes me feel like I'm in a buzzing coffee shop from the comfort of my pajamas at home
- YouTube -- Slow TV (I love the Swedish train videos), and adding the Harry Potter ASMR common rooms c/o @NeoSchmeo
- Snacks -- I need recommendations for this one, but I know it will include mixed bowls of Pirate's Booty & Pretzel M&M's
- Writing Buddy -- I'm deciding between a little needle felted fox  or Saintly Silver stuffed felt of St. Francis de Sales, the patron saint of writers
- No -- the strength to turn down opportunities for fun outings to make time for writing!
- Self-care -- hopefully a massage or two, some good night's sleep, and definitely yoga class
- Neck Wrap -- pop it in the microwave, and pop it 'round your shoulders. Devine!
- My Cat -- the very cuddly Conaty :cat:
- A Book -- to read when I need a writing break and some inspiration
Phew!

All very important things, but my brain is focusing hard on your needle felted fox! I'd love to see a picture of it!
I tried needle felting a cat and it turned out looking like it's disappointed in all my life choices.
Also, I believe someone reccommended the ASMR HP vids to me last NaNo, so I'm simply continuing the tradition!

Ok that's so cute, I'm going to melt!
Hmm, a name recommendation: Mischief!
A clean house (a thorough house cleaning is my Halloween celebration).
So stealing this tradition! Brilliant.

Adding more to my survival kit!
- Google Calendar - It's synced to my phone, and I can see at a glance what classes, meetings, and events I have on any given day, as well as due dates and test dates. I also plan on scheduling some time for writing to see if that helps me at all. Plus, the whole thing is color coded!
- My journal - I'd call it a bullet journal, but I don't think it qualifies if I'm not using it as a planner. This is how I track my writing sprints and where I've been writing my "game plan" for November. I also plan to journal about my day when I feel up to it, but I don't journal every day, and probably never will. I'm currently using a Hustle Co. Classic Hardcover Lined notebook, but I might get a new one before Nano starts.
- Pens - I usually use a black Pilot G-2, but in the interest of saving money, I opted for Z-Grip ballpoint pens, which work okay, in my experience.
- My writers group on Discord - A group of writers from tumblr who support each other and often sprint together
- My stuffed unicorn - Named Tolkein. He's a squishmallow brand friend, super soft and squishy, and the stuffed animal I've chosen to bring to college with me. I guess you could call him my writing totem.
- An abundance of oversized hoodies - I have plenty, and all of them are from some special event in my life. This is one of the ways I stay warm, and pretty ideal for when I have to leave my room.
- Soft blankets - I have too many, in a variety of sizes. Perfect for snuggling up in if I'm cold and happen to be writing in bed, or my hoodie is too far out of reach.
- My wonderful, supportive family - My mom attempted Nano alongside me last year, and decided it wasn't something she enjoyed. But the rest of my family definitely supports my writing and my craziness, something I'll definitely appreciate come Thanksgiving weekend.

My laptop, Idris
I love that your laptop’s name is Idris. You’ve inspired me to think of a name for mine…
I took its name from Doctor Who. :) A character in the episode "The Doctor's Wife" is named Idris, and that's one of my all-time favourite DW eps. So when I bought my new laptop, I named it Idris after that character.

That's who I was thinking of! I knew I knew a character named Idris!
I should also think of a name for mine...

Let's see
*Scrivener - for all round organising & keeping track of word count
*Laptop - what else would Scrivener be on?
*Phone - to jot down notes when I'm away from the computer
*Charged portable phone charger - for waiting around during unexpected doctor / hospital visits
*Stabilo pens - for a great writing experience
*Felt pens - for mapping, mind-mapping, and other drawings that come up
*Notebook - Does anybody have any leads for ones that include both lined and blank pages?

well Baby Bubbles is my brand new laptop, as bubbles was a netbook that can't be updated anymore :( and Baby was my old laptop who is now retired. Big - Momma is the desk top, so I love naming my babies. My wifes apple is called Medusa...and the car is Hermes...so yea...lol.

It's been a few years since I've done this or done it successfully, but let's see if I can remember what works great for me (and take some inspiration from y'all).
Laptop: My poor laptop is quite elderly for a laptop (uh, 7?) and it does a lot of work for me as my primary production machine for a podcast, so to prep for NaNo I need to move the podcast archives off the laptop to my external HD so that the poor machine has the processing power to handle basic word processing.
Dedicated notebook pages: I'm old-school and do a lot of my writing by hand, and then transfer it to digital for word counting purposes about once/week. I also outline & write character sketches by hand, and these all live in a notebook together. It makes for an easy reference that I can carry everywhere with me. (I write in Google Docs on the digital side & to get word count measures.)
Novel playlist: I mostly listen to ambient noise while writing, but I like to make a short playlist for my NaNo novels for when I need a little extra spark of inspiration.
Tea & mug (+ water bottle): Sort of like using bedtimes routines to cue to your brain that it's time to sleep, I find it's really useful to use routines to cue to my brain that it's time to write during November so that the sessions can be shorter and more productive. For me, a particular tea (decaf!) and the same mug always works well. I haven't decided on the tea or the mug yet, but it's a fun thing to pick out. (I always keep a water bottle with me because hydration is so, so important!! Drink more water!)
Snacks: I try to keep something easy and non-messy with me that also gives a little boost, like chocolate-covered peanuts or pretzels. But my go-to "this is stressful and dire and I need help" snack is Oreos & peanut butter. It has been since the first year I won, and I won't mess with what works.
Sweatshirt: This falls into the routine thing: if I wear the same thing to write (when I can), it helps me get into the mood. I bought a soft, lightweight pale pink pullover sweatshirt this month, and it's going to be perfect for noveling. Cozy, but I won't get too hot inside.
Writing Token: This is a new idea for me, but I like it! I have no idea what it might be but I definitely want something. Another little thing to help make the writing time feel like writing time, and maybe it'll be good luck.

My survival kit for 2019:
-My laptop obviously.
-Notebooks for when I feel like handwriting instead of typing.
-Youtube and Netflix. I write with MST3K playing in the background and if not that show then Once Upon a Time. I've found that I don't really do well writing to music.
-Coffee, coffee, coffee. I need all the caffeine. Just give me an IV drip of that stuff.
-My USB stick to save and back up my work.
-My Harley Quinn funko pop. Once I pull her from my shelf and put her on my desk I know it's time to write.
-A blanket. I live in Texas so it's never really that cold in November but I like to pretend.

- Outline in notebook or better on Post-it notes (page a day, to crumple and toss when done that day/section)
- Notebook or two for the actual writing; right now leaning toward hardbound ones from dollar store, with elastic closer, ribbon marker and accordion pocket at back.
- Pens and mechanical pencils; likely whichever ones are available in stationary cup on my desk at work
- Post-it notes for addenda; also mini legal pad (yellow) and tape to add same to right place in notebook(s)
- Spreadsheet with word count and revised targets
- Phone and/or laptop for updating word count; also stopwatch on phone for keeping tabs on lunch and break time remaining so it doesn't reflect too badly on my job performance!
- Coffee and Earl Grey tea; hopefully also apple cider if can find the instant pouches they used to have at the supermarket. Also coffee mug for same, one for at work and one for at home.
- Snacks: Chocolate covered almonds, rice crackers, mint Girl Guide cookies (equivalent to what you know as Thin Mints in the US), Reeses Pieces, trail mix, dried mango slices, leftover Hallowe'en candy ... anything I can eat with a minimum of prep or sticky fingers
- Tarot cards for inspiration/ideas
- Oh, and a plot. Scrapped one too late, abandoned intent to NaNo, returned too late, now trying hard to come up with a plan in the next four days!
Basically that's about it. I try not to let the accoutrements get in the way of the actual writing. But when I look back now, it's actually much bigger and more unwieldy than I'd expected.

Just about everyone has stated most of my survival kit (laptop, music, caffeine, etc). But one big part of my survival kit is enough food prepped and frozen in advance that I can simply heat and eat all month long. I do eat out sometimes throughout the month, especially in the time surrounding a write-in, but having most of the food prepped in advance helps a LOT.

I'm adding Ibuprofen & Paracetamol to my Survival Kit. Pain is debilitating to my mind.

my favorite nanowrimo thread is here!!
- my mossery twinbook - i love this thing. it's basically a planner and notebook organized in one "book". so i have my planner on the left keeping track of my daily word count on top of my courseload and a dotted notebook on the right where i journal and jot down story notes whenever one strikes me (oh, and i also log handwritten words so i don't end up scrolling through reddit during classes when i'm bored--)
- my chromebook - for writing outside of home.
- my custom-built desktop, mordred - for writing at home, if i decide i want to type with a semi-mechanical keyboard. otherwise, i'll write in bed with my chromebook.
- dabble - i tried this writing software out last nanowrimo and did not regret buying a year's membership after i won. it's like a prettier user-friendly version of scrivener to me.
- my headphones + spotify - one of my best investments. i plan to listen to a lot of video game instrumentals and musical soundtracks.
- my boyfriend - my rock and my support system. since we're both aspiring to become published writers, he's also hopefully doing nanowrimo with me.
- discounted halloween candy - a tradition i've formed for the past two years! i treat myself to one piece of chocolate for every 1,000 words i write.
